Queen Elizabeth II was introduced to guitar legends Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Brian May, at reception for the British music industry at Buckingham Palace March 2005. This is a transcript of part of the conversation. The Queen is moving through the room, and approaches Brian May, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.
BRIAN MAY: "I'm very pleased to meet you. I do have an apology to make - for making so much noise on your roof." (referencing the concert played in 2002 at the palace marking the Golden Jubilee - May played the national anthem).
THE QUEEN (sounding amused): "Oh! That was you on the roof?
BRAIN MAY: "That was me, yeah."
JIMMY PAGE: Good evening Ma'am, I'm Jimmy Page." Shakes the Queen's hand. "I'm delighted to meet you."
THE QUEEN : "Are you a guitarist too?"
JIMMY PAGE: " I'm a guitarist as well, yes." Queen turns to Jeff Beck.
JEFF BECK: "I'm Jeff Beck." Shakes hand. Queen looks blankly at him. Clapton then steps forward and introduces himself.
ERIC CLAPTON: "Good evening, Ma'am, my name is Eric Clapton and I am a guitarist as well."
THE QUEEN: "You've been playing for quite a long time have you?"
ERIC CLAPTON: "About, um.... God, yeah!... About 45 years now."
